Everyone wants to say they were first to discover D.S. & Durga, but it’s almost like their scents discover you. Whether it was the eccentric whiff of a D.S. perfume winding it’s way across a bar and into your senses, or coming across a room elevated by their home fragrance – it’s always love at first smell.
Founded by David Seth Moltz and Kavi Moltz, Brooklyn based perfume house D.S. & Durga are true scent pioneers. Combining the talents of a writer/musician turned self-taught perfumer, with an architect and branding guru, D.S. & Durga manage to distil the essence of many art forms into scent. Inspiration comes from music, memory, nature and daydreams of fantastical worlds.
“Everything is made in the belly of the beast. NY has shaped our lives and our vision of the world. It’s in our DNA. Each fragrance is conceived and constructed by D.S. with no middleman or interpretation from an outside perfumer. We began by turning things we loved into scented stories of cowboys, open terrain, Russian novel characters, folks songs and packing them into stamped boxes in D.S.’s Bushwick apartment.”
How to use D.S. & Durga candles
- For optimal burning, trim your wick to 1/4″ before each lighting to avoid smoking and overheating.
- Always protect the surface on which the candle sits.
- The first burn of any candle should be long enough for the entire top layer of wax to liquefy. This will ensure an even burn for each light.
- Refrain from burning candles longer than 3 hours at a time, and never burn a candle when there is less than ¼” of wax at the base.
- Never leave a candle burning unattended or within reach of drafts, pets, or small children.
- Candle jar will be hot after burning, so allow the wax to cool completely before handling
- Once the flame is extinguished make sure the wick is upright and centered.
D.S. & Durga Reviews
"The Brooklyn-based perfume brand takes a fresh and creative approach to scent, designing fragrances that evoke strong memories or impressions. The result is candles unlike anything else we’ve seen: try portable fireplace (like all the best bits of a smoky bonfire), tomb of the eagles (inspired by the ancient cliff-top sites of Orkney) and our pick for spring, Big Sur after rain. Its full-bodied, wet, eucalyptus scent conjures images of driving along the Californian coastline, warm sun on your face following a downpour."
"This limited edition candle will fill your home with house-warming notes of rosemary, cedar, clove, black pine and ginger."
"From New York perfumers D.S. & Durga, this candle promises to ‘take you out on the open road’. Inspired by a 1980s road trip, it has notes of suede, leather, vinyl and white violet, with hints of ‘leather seats, damp earth and diesel smoke’. Mmmm! A blend of new car and petrol. Sharp, smoky and earthy. The only place I’d burn this is in the garage."
"Made in honor of Diwali, D.S. & Durga’s Rama Won’t You Please Come Home candle combines Indian forest tree flowers with tuberose, gardenia, and bastard teak."
"Transporting you to the plains of California after a desert storm, this unique candle captures the exact sensation of standing amidst fresh Eucalyptus, sea spray and wild magnolia. When you can't fly to California, burn this instead."
"Brooklyn-based DS & Durga takes an experiential approach to scent, building its fragrances around evocative memories or images. The new “Rama won’t you please come home” conjures north India, Diwali and the story of the titular Hindu god Rama. It is a floral, earthy and subtly exotic scent, with teak, gardenia, sandalwood, tree flowers and tuberose. It’s a subtle scent but perceptible almost immediately after lighting, and lingers in a room long after the flame has been extinguished."
"No joke, this was meant to smell like a thunderstorm over asphalt. Amazingly, it does."
"Best herbal candle - Brooklyn-based D.S & Durga is one of the best-looking niche fragrance brands to invest in today. The scents are remarkable, too – Big Sur After Rain clears the air with a hit of herbal eucalyptus, underpinned by wet grass and dew-kissed plants. Connecting the dots between sound and scent, the duo have created a playlist to match the mood of each votive – hit play as you ignite."

"If anything needs to be portable in the festive season, it's a Christmas tree, right? If any smell could create a hygge Christmas, this would be it. This absolutely delicious soy wax candle from D.S. & Durga conjures images of fathers wading through the snow dragging the freshly cut tree, just in time for decorating and the arrival of old St Nick. Whatever style of home you live in, it will be sure to smell of smoky wood, fresh forests and traditional nordic comforts."
"A Brooklyn based label founded by David and Kavi Moltz. Their scents are original, storied, and inspired by nature, art, and everyday objects. Get their cool (literally and figuratively) Big Sur candle that hints of minty eucalyptus and wet wood. Products are in unique packaging so unboxing is an experience."
"Indie brand D.S. & Durga is known for the intoxicatingly inventive combinations of notes in their perfumes—and their candles are no different. Strike a warm and spicy note with a hint of fig, cardamom, saffron, and ginger. "
"D.S. & Durga candles, though made in Brooklyn, always remind me of what would be in a stylish and minimalist Los Angeles apartment. Possibly because I knew a person in Los Angeles who had one once. According to me it smells like warm, creamy sea, which maybe doesn’t sound great, but please trust me that it is. It’s interesting and relaxed and very cool."
"For some scent escapism, Coveteur senior beauty editor Hannah Baxter has been “craving anything that reminds me of a summer vacation spent hiking in the Catskills or visiting friends in Oregon. That means fir trees, evergreen, grass, cedar — warm, woodsy scents.” Among her favorites are Byredo Woods and D.S. & Durga Big Sur After Rain, the latter of which was crafted to smell like “rain water in eucalyptus groves off Highway 1.”"
