Every scented candle addict knows that Autumn is the start of candle season. The time of year when it’s acceptable to cancel all plans, because snuggling in your softest blanket on the sofa, while burning your favourite fall fragrance, is infinitely better than braving the elements outside.
If you’re anything like me, creating a cosy home in which to hibernate is one of life’s ultimate pleasures.
Like rediscovering your favourite jumper and turning on the heating, the addition of scented candles to the ever-darkening evenings is a ritual I look forward to each year.
Just like fall trees turning their leaves a myriad of burnished reds, bronze and golds without fail, my home inevitably becomes a shrine to all the best autumn scented candles.
I’ve rounded up a selection of my favourite fall scented candles, the perfect way to make your home more inviting this season. Don’t forget to let us know on social which fragrances you’ll be lighting this autumn!
Autumnal Candles Picks From Those In The Know
We couldn’t agree more with Michelle Manetti who wrote at GoodHousekeeping “Fall and candles go hand in hand. Once the cooler weather hits, all it really takes is the scent of sweet apple, pumpkin, or cinnamon to put you in the coziest of moods. And let’s face it, there’s nothing like a flickering wick to complete the ambiance you’ve created with your fall decor”. In the article, Michelle chooses a number of candles that share many of the fragrance notes we’ve picked here – think warm spices, harvest fruits, and deep woods.
Over at WhoWhatWear, Maxine Eggenberger selected the candles she’ll be burning this season in the article “Candles Are My Weakness, and These Are the Ones I’m Buying for Autumn”. Maxine’s taste skews towards designer brands, but Skandinavisk’s Hygge candle made it onto the list with them saying “The Scandinavian term “hygge” encompasses the feeling of finding cosiness and contentment in the smallest everyday moments. And that’s exactly how I feel when I burn this subtly sweet candle.”
Boy Smells’ Cinderose candle, Rest by Eym, Cire Trudon’s Ourika, The Old Library by Our Lovely Goods and Rama Won’t You Please Come Home by D.S. & Durga also made it into Maxine’s autumn candle collection, meaning you can find over half of her selection at Osmology!
The team at House Beautiful were already dreaming of fall fragrances in July when they wrote: “The 29 Best Fall Candles to Get You Psyched For the Season Ahead”. Within their candle roundup, they’ve selected a wide range of notes saying “Whether you prefer fruity scents, sugary scents, or spicy, musky scents (or even something different altogether!) there’s a little something seasonal for everyone. Notes like vanilla, fig, pine, clove, cedarwood, pomegranate, and more can all add so much autumnal goodness to your home.”
Within the list, they’ve favoured US-based brands, with a few European designers thrown in for good measure. Boy Smells is obviously included in the lineup (alongside P.F. Candle Co. and LAFCO) with Ash being their chosen autumn candle from the brand, saying “Moody, woodsy, and mysterious with a fragrant mix of firewood, smoke, charcoal, palo santo, and hay, this candle will make you feel like you’re bundled up around a fire.”
Paula Lee at Oprah Magazine listed the “28 Best Fall-Scented Candles That Smell Like Sweater Weather” and we were really excited to spot Brooklyn Candle Studio’s Montana Forest Candle right at the top. Its “hints of blue spruce, pine, and moss are meant to whisk you away to the woodsy mountains of Montana” and we think it does just that – a great shout for this time of year.
At Refinery29, Elizabeth Buxton and Alexandra Polk teamed up to find the “Best Fall Candles That Smell Soft & Cozy (Not Like A PSL Fever Dream)”. Their choices include Byredo and Diptyque bestsellers, alongside D.S. & Durga’s Portable Fireplace candle – a scent that should come with Autumn as standard. The Amber Black Vanilla Candle by LAFCO seemed to be one of their favorites for the season, saying “LAFCO wanted to craft the ultimate cozy candle, and they did just that with this clean-burning soy option. As one reviewer exclaimed: ‘I always have this candle burning at home – it has a warm, vanilla, and brown sugary smell that instantly relaxes me when I get home.’”
Here in the UK, Heatworld’s Arianna Chatzidakis selected more affordable candles for the “11 autumn candles that will make your home super toasty” list. Included was the Forever Sunday candle by The Nomad Society that has been a solid feature of our autumn candle burning since it launched.
Here at Osmology, we celebrate the start of candle season by adding loads of new scents to the site from the world’s most exciting home fragrance brands – don’t forget to check out our latest releases here.
